Deckerville DCDC Update

By Angie Wagester
Special to TRL

What a great start to the year! At our first meeting of the year we did the usual meeting routine of signing in, approving the minutes and treasurers report and then moved on to the good stuff!
We did a quick review of the Dickens of a Christmas. Overall it went well. There were over 300 kids that visited Santa and approximately 55 came and enjoyed the crafts, games and movie on Main Street. But, this year, we hope to see more come and enjoy the festivities downtown. We will be adding a “Merry & Bright” Christmas lighting contest this year for residences and businesses. Homes and businesses will be judged by a panel of judges and a prize will be given to one home and one business for being the merry & brightest of them all. Specifics on the contest will be discussed later in the year.
The pool project is temporally on hold until we can get a company to come and evaluate the existing pool condition. Would it be best to renovate the existing pool or build a new pool at (for example) the park? If you would like to be a part of the Pool Committee please contact the DCDC for more information.
We had the pleasure of welcoming Deckerville Community Hospital’s new Marketing Director, Cheryl Hieber. And boy, what enthusiasm she brings! She has jumped right in and gone to work not just promoting the hospital, but the community as well. DCH is uniting with the American Heart Association to help bring awareness to women’s heart health by “Painting the Town Red” the month of February. The hospital and local individuals have come together with some fun ways to promote a healthy heart. FREE Piloxing class will be on February 9, from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., at the Deckerville Elementary Gym, FREE PiYo class will be on February 23, also 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., at the Deckerville Elementary Gym, and a Fundraising event “Painting for the Heart” will be held on Wednesday, February 17, at 6:00 p.m., and again on Sunday, February 21, at 2:00 p.m., at the Mi-Dahs Well Hall in Deckerville. Tickets for the fundraiser are $45 each and include your 16×20 canvas painting and heart healthy snacks. Seating is limited so get your tickets now! Call Cheryl at DCH at 810-376-7015 for more information and to purchase your tickets.
Plans for the second annual Heritage Fest are underway. Crafters are needed for Main Street. If you or someone you know is interested please contact the DCDC. We are including the “Give it a Whirl” bike tour this year. We are all very excited for this event! The bike tour is a one day ride that will take you to view approximately 65 windmills in our area and show off the beauty of our rolling farm land community. Give it a Whirl is not a race but a gathering of outdoor enthusiasts who want to enjoy a little physical exercise in one of the most beautiful areas in the state of Michigan! You have your choice of three routes – 31.6 miles, 22.1 miles (to see windmills) or a 3.2 mile trip. Register by May 13 – entry fee is $15 per rider and includes a t-shirt, registration fee later than May 13 will be $25, per rider, shirts will be given while quantities last. If you are interested in joining us please email me for a registration form!
Our next meeting will be Thursday, February 11, at 6:00 p.m., in the D’Ville Diner Banquet Room. You do not have to be a member to attend our meetings or help on a committee. And for those of you who have Facebook don’t forget to “like” our page – Deckerville DCDC and “Share” us with your friends and family!
