Reid to be Honored

Joyce Reid of Deckerville, was recently selected as Teacher of the Year by the Port Huron Music Teachers Association (PHMTA).
Reid was chosen for this honor because of her profound influence promoting music education for many years in the Deckerville, Harbor Beach and Sandusky areas. PHMTA Acting President, Ruth Fry, stated, “The impact Joyce Reid has had upon musicians, their families and communities in Michigan’s Thumb region is nearly impossible to measure.”
Reid has instructed students, from pres-school through adult – on piano, organ, voice, violin, accordian and guitar. She has taught students at Reid Music Studion, Deckerville; Our Lady of Lake Huron School, Harbor Beach; and Kohn’s Music Studio, Sandusky. Her students have participated in numerous festivals, judged events, musicales, talent shows and community events, as well as in her studio recitals.
In addition to membership and serving on the board for Port Huron Music Teachers Association, she has maintained memberships with the Port Huron Musicale, the Michigan Council of Arts and is founder of the Deckerville Historical Museum. Reid has performed on piano and organ for many years at area churches.
Reid has been married for 59 years and assisted her husband, Harold, with his auctioneer, heating, cooling and plumbing business, and the family farm. They have a son, daughter, and five grandchildren.
Reid is an ordained minister, and her other interests include serving the local and national Indian missions, gardening, canning, composing and writing.
She will be honored at the MMTA Fall Convention October 11, 12 and 13, in Grand Rapids.
