Lady ‘Skins Perfect through three

The Sandusky girls basketball team is picking up right where they left off last season, winning games in fashionable style. The Lady Redskins took to the hardcourt last week against Cass City and came away with a 68-46 win to move to 3-0 on the young season.
Coach Al DeMott commented after the game, “I thought we had great team balance with 10 girls scoring. We shot the ball very well up there, hitting 28 of 57 from the floor. We did a great job of sharing the ball and moved the ball around to the open player. We had 24 assists in the game.”
Sophomore Haley Nelson is among those that DeMott has looked to for scoring and she didn’t let her coach down. Nelson lit up the scoreboard for 18 points to go along with six rebounds, four assists, five steals and four blocked shots.
The Lady ‘Skins raced out to a 18-6 first quarter lead with their balanced scoring attack with six players getting in the score book. Nelson, Lacey Nielson and Jenna Franzel all scored in the second stanza as Sandusky built a 35-16 advantage at the intermission.
Nelson caught fire in the third quarter, ripping the net for nine of her 18 points while the team went 7 of 8 from the charity stripe to put the game away. Madyson Jansen was a perfect 4 for 4 from the line and Nelson was 3 of 4 to spark a 23-point third quarter offensive blitz.
Franzel, a guard followed up Nelson’s big game with nine points while three other players – Jansen (four assists and five steals), Nielson (seven rebounds and three assists) and Cierra Phillips (four rebounds) all pumped in eight points.
Freshman post player Gabrielle Gough had another strong game for Sandusky, ripping down nine rebounds and scoring four points and Madison Armstrong had six assists and four steals. Leah Rourke chipped in with five points and Caroline Ross scored four. As a team, the Lady Redskins converted 11 of 17 free throws.
Sandusky returned to action this week, hosting Capac on Tuesday night before opening GTC-East action at Marlette in an early season league showdown with the Lady Red Raiders. The only other scheduled game before January 1 is a non-conference title set to be played at Deckerville on December 29th.
