Sandusky football dominates Rockets

Coaches want to see improvement in their team from week to week, especially in the early stages of the season. The Sandusky Redskins (2-0 overall) gave Coach Craig Jacobson plenty to smile about with a well-rounded 46-8 whipping of GTC crossover foe Reese in a contest that started Thursday night, but was cancelled until Friday due to persistent thunderstorms in the area.
The two schools faced similar conditions a year ago in Reeese when storms forced a number of delays before the Rockets finally managed to get a win..
Last week’s contest was all Sandusky as the Redskins dominated on both sides of the ball. Offensively, six different players scored for the winners who punched in three touchdowns in the fourth quarter with the game well in hand. Defensively, senior Danny Hale played an outstanding game, snagging three interceptions including one that stopped a Reese scoring drive deep on Sandusky territory.
Leading 6-0 after one quarter, Sandusky made it a 12-0 game on Chase Tucker’s first of two TD runs, this one covering two yards. Tucker, who now has five scores on the young season finished the game with two Tds and 113 yards rushing.
Senior running back, Casey Hyatt who is a C-PS transfer, had another big game, rushing for 96 yards, including a 72 yard scoring jaunt with just over two minutes to go before half time to give the ‘Skins a 18-0 lead. Last week, Hyatt saved the win for Sandusky by making a game changing tackle near the goal line against USA.
Outstanding defense once again sparked Sandusky in the third quarter when Tate Larson vaulted over the Reese front line to block a Rocket punt, giving his team first and ten deep in Rocket territory. A few plays later, Tucker scored again to open up a commanding 25-0 lead with 8:41 to play in the third quarter.
Other touchdowns came from Joe Stone (73 yards rushing including a 50 yard fourth quarter touchdown run), Wray Devault, Trey Brown and Matt Alexander who hauled in a nice 28 yard scoring toss from senior quarterback Brandon Potter to start the scoring. Potter finished the game completing two of three passes for 56 yards. Sandusky amassed over 300 yards rushing against the Rockets.
Friday night, the Redskins hit the road as they play their third GTC crossover contest of the season, taking on a much improved Bad Axe squad. The Hatchets feature one of the top quarterbacks in the Thumb in senior Tommy Morneau. After the Bad Axe game, the Redskins return home to open GTC East play with defending league champion Harbor Beach. The Pirates fell to a shocking 0-2 mark on the year with their second straight loss last week.
