SMCA to offer Free EMS Training

Sanilac Medical Control Authority (SMCA), through its education arm, Sanilac Medical Services (SMS), is offering a new National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT) course for EMS practitioners on March 4 and 5, 2016, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at the SMCA office on the second floor of the Health Department building at 170 Dawson St., Sandusky. The 16 hour Principles of Ethics and Personal Leadership (PEPL) course provides EMS and Mobile Healthcare (MHC) practitioners at all levels with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively interact with patients and their families, other medical personnel, co-workers, supervisors and community residents at large.
“This course is offered at no cost to in-county practitioners,” reports John Cristini, SMCA Director. “Sanilac Medical Services funds the program with money provided by the Coordination of Medical Control/Emergency Services millage.”
“The course covers topics and skills in areas such as personal and professional core values, ethics, decision-making, duty to serve, strategies for conflict resolution, and ambassadorship for the profession, their agencies, and the community at large,” continues Cristini.
Through course presentation, dialog, and learning activities, including written and video case studies, students will explore the importance of ethics and personal leadership; identify their leadership roles in civic life as individuals, family members, professionals, and members of the community; and practice the skills important to the exercise of personal, ethical leadership.
“The course is accredited by the Continuing Education Coordinating Board for Emergency Medical Services (CECBEMS) and recognized by the National Registry of EMTs (NREMT),” shares Cristini. “Students who take this course may choose to receive a free one-year membership in NAEMT.”
