Port Sanilac’s Rising Sun Opens

Just north of the stoplight in Port Sanilac is a quaintly painted house, that was purchased by Bob and Janet Townley last July, with plans to open an art and craft gallery. Along with the help of their daughter, Jen, those plans have become a reality.
The Rising Sun Art Studio & Gallery, owned and operated by mother/daughter artist duo Janet and Jen Townley, both Michigan natives, carries paintings, soaps, candles, cards, ceramics, glass, jewelry, kitchen and bath items, with more to come.
They sell only Michigan handmade products in the gallery, as well as offering art classes in the studio. The gallery’s focus is high end art & crafts from all over the state of Michigan.
The studio specializes in painting classes. Janet is a primarily self-taught artist who has been creating for over 40 years. She specializes in oil painting on canvas. She works full time at the gallery and personally teaches all the classes. She has her paintings as well as other art times for sale in the gallery.
Jen is a C.C.S. graduate with a B.F.A. in ceramics. She currently works full time as an automotive sculptor for General Motors. She specializes in porcelain and has several pieces for sale in the gallery.
Classes will be offered on Thursdays and Sundays, from 1:00 p.m. – ‘til done! Each month a different class will be offered – from water color and acrylic painting to windchimes, votive holders and make-bake-take mugs. They will try to accomodate special days/times for private parties (BYOB), with a maximum seating for 10. It is for ages 12 and up, and all supplies are included. Price will vary depending on the project and the different classes will be posted on facebook (rising sun art studio & gallery).
Janet and her husband (the “silent” partner) are full-time residents of Port Sanilac, formerly living in Ferndale. Janet is very familiar with the area, as her parents had a cottage in the area. She considers Port Sanilac “a gemstone”.
The gallery is located at 109 North Ridge Street (M-25). It is open Thursday – Sunday, noon to 5:00 p.m. For more information, call 810-425-3040.
